Aluminum alloy AlSi9Cu3, also known as EN AC-46000, is designed specifically for casting. Its characteristics are suitable for different fabrication (not tempered or treated) states. The Euronorm (EN) number for this material is 46000 the EN chemical symbol is AISi9Cu3. When compared to other EN-cast Aluminum, its ductility is on the low side. In addition, its electrical and thermal conductivities are both moderate.



In addition to its higher thermal conductivity, excellent strength, and good chemical resistance, the Aluminum alloy AlSi9Cu3 is also 3D printable. The combination of Silicon (Si) and Copper guarantees strong mechanical strength, and the lower Silicon percentage improves the machining qualities as well.

AlSi9Cu3 is unique among casting aluminum alloys due to its inclusion of Lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr). Chromium is added to metals before they are hot worked or heat treated to increase their ductility and toughness while decreasing the grain development that occurs during these processes.

In addition to improving the alloy’s strength, Chromium makes it more resistant to cracking due to corrosion or stress. The existence of Chromium in an alloy will cause the resulting anodized film to be slightly yellow. Lead is added to metals to make them easier to machine, but this comes at the expense of increased toxicity and decreased weldability.
